This report provides an overview of the major trends in demographic changes in Bangladesh and the population challenges it currently faces. Fertility is a major catalyst for population growth which affects the overall health conditions of Bangladesh’s population, both directly and indirectly. For this reason, the change in Bangladesh’s total fertility rate and the consequences for the country’s health system will be discussed in detail. The focus of this in-depth discussion lies on the impact of national family planning programmes and various socio-economic factors on the total fertility rate.
