The relevance of political economy analysis for the approaches of German Development Cooperation

  • From a political economy perspective, how do GDC's health and social protection approaches work - in theory and in practice?
  • How do these approaches impact on the interests, resources and power relations of the different stakeholders?
  • How could we better take account of this in our work?

Guidance for case presenters in the working groups

Session 2: Focus on GDC approaches and project implementation

Objectives of the working group

  • The participants apply typical diagnostic questions from political economy frameworks to a real case presented by a colleague.
  • They get an understanding of how political economy analysis can inform our technical approaches and how we implement them.
  • The case presenter gets new insights on the challenge presented and new ideas as to how it could be addressed.

Note of thanks

This is just to let you know that we highly appreciate your willingness to present a challenge from your work. Presenting a ‘good practice example’ is mostly easier than presenting a problem/dilemma/open question one is facing. We hope that political economy analysis will provide us with a new perspective on the case/problem you present and, perhaps, help to generate new ideas for approaching it.

Schedule for the group work

1.      Case presentation (20 min.)
2.      Joint analysis (40 min.)
3.      Applying the new insights and ideas to the case (20 min.)
4.      Feedback by the case presenter (10 min.)

a. How has this discussion changed the way you are thinking about the challenge you presented?
b. Which ideas were particularly interesting, and why?

How to prepare your presentation

  • You will have 20 minutes to present your case.
  • You can support your presentation by a poster, flipchart or a powerpoint presentation (maximum 10 slides!).
  • You should describe a particular challenge/dilemma/open question you face as technical advisor
  • Please present essential context information
  • You don’t need to present your own ‘political economy analysis’ of your case: This will be done jointly as part of the group work.
  • The presentation should address the following:

o        Starting point: problem, request for support, policy initiative, etc.
o        Main actors
o        Description of the intervention
o        The underlying hypothesis, rationale or results chain of the intervention
o        GDC’s role in this
o        The challenge/dilemma/problem you face
